Iran will stop attacking its neighbors until there are assaults from there: Pezeshkian
Iranian retaliation strikes during the conflict have targeted Arab states in the Gulf and beyond that have US installations.
Iran's president, Masoud Pezeshkian, has said that neighboring nations will no longer be targeted until an attack comes from them. The war, which was started by the United States and Israel and resulted in Tehran's persistent retaliation throughout the Gulf and beyond, is now in its second week.
According to Pezeshkian on Saturday, the proposal was approved by the Iranian interim leadership council on Friday.
The president also expressed regret to neighboring nations for the recent strikes in comments reported by Iranian media.
The Iranian president's comment "is a deescalation, however slight, in a very escalated situation as it is day eight after the commencement of the US and Israeli assaults over Iran," according to Tohid Asadi of Al Jazeera, who was reporting from Tehran. Pezeshkian made his remarks in a five-minute statement that had been rehearsed. "In violation of international law and rules, he started by mentioning the attacks on residential areas, schools, and hospitals. He continued by urging people to stand together and support one another in order to protect the nation's sovereignty. Asadi added, "He also issued a strong message to the Americans."
But Iran's formidable Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also had a say.
The statement, which was reported by state media, read, "Following the president's words, the armed forces once again reaffirm that they respect the interests and national sovereignty of neighboring nations and, up to this moment, have committed no aggression against them."
"However, all military bases and interests of criminal America and the fake Zionist regime on land, at sea, and in the air across the region will be considered primary targets and will come under the powerful and crushing strikes of the mighty armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran if the previous hostile actions continue."
